Maps of the Disappearing (Maps of Ghostly Landscapes)

Hand embroidery, 2024 – 2025

The series of embroidery based on the topographical maps of Ukrainian East, namely border areas of Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, taken from the online resources such as Open Street Maps or DeepState. Lines stitched with white thread on white cloth (traditional for my home Kharkiv region embroidery technique) play on the edge of perception. While the landscapes depicted – of hills, plains and riverbeds near Vovchansk, Soledar, Svatove – are now, unfortunately, on the edge of extinction, of erasure both in terms of the identity, as well as of the physical destruction.
